Monument Avenue: A Pictorial Hardcover – November 16, 2020

Monument Avenue has long been a grand avenue of both art and history. It has been recognized for its historical significance. In 1997, Monument Avenue was designated as a National Historic Landmark. Monument Avenue was home to five monuments until July 1, 2020 when Mayor Levar Stoney of Richmond began the systematic removal of the grand monuments and other Confederate monuments throughout the city. Virginia Governor Ralph Northam likewise called for the removal of the state-owned Robert E. Lee Monument and set the Commonwealth on a downward spiral with regard to public art and monuments. All of this occurred only a few years after Monument Avenue was deemed one of the ten great streets in America by the American Planning Association in 2007.This pictorial of the Avenue, and other removed monuments, was compiled prior to the 2020 protests and removal efforts. It is my sincere hope that these images preserve the fond memories of the city for those lucky enough to have seen them before the destruction, and gives a glimpse into the beauty that was once Monument Avenue for those that never had the opportunity to visit.This second edition includes ten images of Monument Avenue.
